Grill seekers! Brits BBQ in the rain, says shock poll

  • 61% of UK households would fire up the barbecue regardless of bad weather.
  • More than a third of Brits believe food cooked on the barbie tastes better than if cooked elsewhere.
  • More than 25% of Millennials value their pizza oven more than a traditional BBQ.

It turns out over half (61%) of UK households won’t let the bad weather stop them from having a barbecue.

That’s according to a survey conducted by online electricals retailer AO.com.

It comes as 2000 Brits were quizzed on what their barbecue habits were as we head into peak BBQ season. The results were a mixed bag that revealed some growing trends among the younger generations and how barbecuing was viewed as a nation.

A further third admitted they think food cooked on the barbie tastes better than if cooked elsewhere, while another third said food was the best thing about having a garden barbecue.

Other key takeaways were that a good number of people enjoyed hosting friends and family, (31%) while the sunny weather was the best thing about having people round for a BBQ (35%). There was also those Brits who looked forward to a drink or two while the weather was good (19%).

A growing and perhaps surprising trend was the amount of people interested in pizza ovens. More than a quarter of millennials value their pizza ovens more than a traditional barbecue

Food Waste Disruptor, Martyn Odell, or Lagomchef to those online, shared his thoughts on why Brits might be barbecuing regardless of the weather. He explained:

“It’s inspiring to see that so many people wouldn’t let a little bit of rain ruin their summer fun. Having people round to socialise and perhaps test out your pizza oven is all part and parcel of enjoying the annual barbecues.

“The best thing you can do next time you fire up the barbecue – don’t overthink it! Whether it’s for the camaraderie, the drinks or the good barbecue food, the most important thing you can do this summer is enjoy your day even if the rain tries to dampen your spirit.”

Conversely, the same survey unveiled that nearly a quarter of UK households aren’t looking forward to barbecues at all.

Boomers seemed to be the least impressed with almost a third (30%) admitting that they weren’t excited for a summer barbecue compared to a mere 6% of Gen Zs.

This shocking stat became even more alarming when the same survey also revealed that Brits are ditching the meat, with just one in five (19%) enjoying a burger or 13% ready for a steak this summer.

Ends.
